Dr Siddarth Agarawal, executive director of UHRC, said one of the objectives of the workshop and subsequent deliberations would be to contribute to the National Urban Health Mission, proposed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Dr Masse Bateman from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), a financial supporter of the UHRC, stressed the urgency of developing strategies for improving the access of the urban poor to health services. “The 100 million urban poor represent the fastest growing segment of the Indian population,” he said.
