The former World No. 1 played the Johnnie Walker Classic in Gurgaon two weeks ago and returned to Florida unwell, forcing him to take an unprecedented four days off practice.
"Tried to eat clean and drink bottled water, and it didn't work," Singh said at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, where he built up a two-shot half-way lead.
"I got the flu and a stomach virus, so both things were not very good. I came back on Monday and just never left the bathroom for four days. It was almost a forced rest," the Fijian said.
He had even contemplated withdrawing from the tournament but had a remarkable recovery as he tries to successfully defend his title.
"I was very weak, you know, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. But you start eating, and you gain it back quickly. I was pretty healthy when I went there (India). I was working out all year and feeling pretty strong, so I think that helped me," Singh was quoted as saying in media reports.
He remarked that he had lost so much weight that he could see his ribs under his shirt.
