Chandigarh, January 10 The first 300 MW unit of the 600 MW Deenbandhu Chottu Ram thermal plant will start commercial production of electricity from January 15. The plant of Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited is being set up by Reliance Energy Limited, according to Prof Virender Singh, political advisor of Haryana Chief Minister, who inspected the on-going work at the thermal plant in Yamunanagar yesterday.

He said that the second unit of 300 MW of the plant would start production by March. Prof Virender took a dig at the opposition parties who were criticising the government for shortage of power in the state.

“Work on four mega power projects have been started by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and by year 2010 there would be surplus power in the state”, said Prof Singh, who made a second inspection of the plant in less than 15 days.

Singh accused former Chief Minister Bhajan Lal of not starting work on the plant although it was inaugurated during his tenure about 15 years ago.

“When the foundation stone of the plant was laid during the tenure of Bhajan Lal, the cost of the project was only Rs 400 core which later escalated to Rs 2,400 crores”, said the political advisor.

He hoped that the 600 MW thermal plant would help sort out the power crisis in the state.
