Bangalore In remarks that may ruffle some feathers, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Thursday said that he would not allow growth of "pub culture" in the state but made it clear that people taking law into their hands will be dealt with firmly.

More chief ministers on Thursday joined the debate on pub culture with Karnataka's B S Yeddyurappa opposing it while Ashok Gehlot of Rajasthan seeking to distance himself from the Mangalore incident.

Condemning the attack on women allegedly by Sri Ram Sene in a Mangalore pub, Dikshit said that liquor shops should be opened in areas which were not near schools and places of worship. "I also believe that children who go to these places with the knowledge of their parents are mature enough to handle themselves," she said.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Wednesday had kicked up a storm when he slammed 'pub culture' and said he was 'against boys and girls walking hand in hand in pubs and malls.'.

Meanwhile, Yeddyurappa said that he will discuss the issue of banning Sri Ram Sene, the outfit accused in the pub attack case, in the state cabinet.

"We won't allow this pub culture in Karnataka to grow. But on the other hand, those who take law in their hand will be dealt with very firmly," he told TV channels.

His remarks came even as Sene chief and an accused in the pub case Pramod Muthalik reminded the BJP that they formed the government in Karnataka on the Hindutva plank and asked the party not to sacrifice Hindu organisations for the sake of expediency.

Yeddyurappa claimed that Sene has no connection with BJP. "That's an individual organisation," he said.

Replying to a question on the issue of banning Sene, he said, "we will discuss it with the police officers and I will discuss it with the cabinet."

The police, he said, were also exploring the possibility of invoking the stringent Goonda Act against the pub case accused.

"Anyhow, we are not going to allow such incidents to happen again in the state. Nobody should take law into their hands and it is a very unfortunate incident. That is why I have taken immediate action and the situation is under control," he said.

Replying to questions on Sene, Yeddyurrapa, at the same time, said "by just banning any organisation, this problem will not be solved. We will wait for a few more days. We will watch their activities. Suitable action will be taken at an appropriate time".

Noting that so far the state authorities have arrested 33 people including Muthalik, he said, "From the government's side, we have taken action and we will take strong action against anti-social elements irrespective of their religious or political affiliations".

Attacking the opposition for its accusations against his government in the wake of the pub case, he said "there has been conspiracies going on. It is known to everybody. I don't want to name anybody".

He alleged that the opposition parties "were not able to digest the growing popularity of our government in the first eight months in office."

Defending the "proven track records" of BJP governments in promoting the culture of tolerance, he said his administration stood for peaceful coexistence in the state.

"However, some anti-social elements are trying to malign my government's image but they will not succeed. My government will uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution and the rule of law," he said.

all bull shits! by todays student mi8 b 2morrows leader on 23 Feb 2009

pub culture entered our country very long back, thouhg not in all cities few of them possessed it.......but for these many years where was the government to ban them....it did nothing....it means our gov. takes actions n methods only to cure but nvr it is pepared to prevent.......if it wud have banned the entry itself then these issues wud have not happen....so than searching whom to blame n whom to punish it is better to think abt how to reduse the ill happenings.......than trying to ban the culture.......bcoz wen westen style in bussiness is followed there is no fault in following the western culture unless n untill the one who follows it is prepared to allow his/her fellow to follow the same as he/she does...if not it is the best to "shut n sit" without participating in any of such issues...........it all lies in our thinking......we think good its good if not its really bad........never try to screw us(boys or girls of teen n teen )bcoz its the environment that designs us...thankyou

Indian democracy permits its subjects to have interaction with opposite sex.Yedurappa does not know what is pub he said plub

Stay Out by Rajesh on 30 Jan 2009

Grow up people. Indian culture has also produced the wonders of Khajuraho and Kamasutra. It is only fools and even rapists themselves with undeveloped sexuality who try to act as moral apostles. They see society with their own dirty minds. However pub culture has nothing to do with sexuality any way. It is all about the right of the youth to intermingle, where boys and girls can meet, and get to know each other. Yeddyurrapa and Gehlot should stay out of the lives of the youth of a free and democratic India.

Khajuraho and Kamasutra by SC Agggarwal on 30 Jan 2009

To see the wonders of Khajuraho one has to travel to Khajuraho and to read Kamasutra one had to learn and study Sanskrit. Except a few journalists and their friends in the garb of pub goers are making noise but it is not liked by the general public at large. So far as BSY and Gehlot are concerned they have to see the welfare of the public and not those who are spoiling the Indian Culture as given by Maharishi Valmiki.

PUB CULTURE by N.V.SANKARAN on 30 Jan 2009

The wonders of Khajuraho were created during the 6th century and Kamasuthra much earlier. I think, Indian society has progressed very much after that. Do you want to go back to those ages. All the people who take objections to Mr. Yediyurappa's remarks are worried about losing their booze. Constitution provides freedom, but should it be unlimited or uncontrolled? For societal harmony, I think, there should be some limit to one's freedom.

Pub culture is not Indian Culture by S.C. Aggarwal on 30 Jan 2009

Indian culture is what has been described by Maharishi Valmiki in Ramayan. Treat woman as one's own mother and others' daughter as one's own daughter. We have forgotton this culture and that is why there are problems like HIV AIDs, pub culture and daily watching semi naked photos of women and unmarried girls offoreign countries in our daily newspapers like Hindustan Times, Times of India and unfortunately other dailies are not lagging behind. Why the editors of daily newspapers do not publish semi naked photos of their friends and relatives? Why this pub and AIDs culture is being imposed in India by the journalists?

Sheila's double standards by Bharat Sehrawat on 30 Jan 2009

Some nerve our CM, Sheila Dikshit has in speaking through her teeth. Delhi is the rape capital of India and Sheila ji and her government should be ashamed of the steps (lack of) she has taken to counter this heinous crime. On top of that, her audacity was for all to see when she coldly commented on the murder of woman journalist Soumya Viswanathan that “one should not be adventurous.” It is quite rich to read what she is saying now.

Doctor cure thy mind by Desi Pundit on 30 Jan 2009

If the 'Alien' culture is so bad why have you chsen to live in it.Your education and living in that 'alien' culture did not open your little mind to gender eqality. You are just another typical indian doctor who is genius in his own little mind trying to impress others by inserting DR infront of his name.

Pubs and Nightmares by Indian on 30 Jan 2009

I certainly with Vijaykumar comments. Also, the media's contention in this issue is hopeless. Everybody condemned the attack on girls at pubs, but we should look at the whole issue to prevent such incidences. It's well know that Mumbai and Goa got into a mess with these rave parties and pub culture, which is quite shameful to the rest of Indians. Many people said 'it's a shame on the eve of republic day over the Mangalore incidence. However, where is the media when Mumbai police arrested around hundred teenagers with drugs at a pub in Juhu last month. Moreover, Rahul Mahajan and Sanjay Dutt were best examples for the effect of pub culture on teenagers, a failed marriage and troubled life.Let us be very clear, these guys comes from good family, but yet made their life miserable due to drug dens at pubs. In fact Goa is turning in to a ghost city with drugs, rapes and scandals, simply its due to pub culture! Remember, Salman Khan antics with drunk and drive!

Pubs are a health care , Law by vijay on 30 Jan 2009

CM yeddyurappa has a sensible and just approach. I m sure majority of the karnataka people like this approach. The liberal westernised fringe can shout all it wants. Pubs, promiscuity, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs. All the above go together with devastating consequences to health ( thats why even the UK and the USA are restricting them). Unfortunately our illiterate english media wants the pub culture to take deep roots in our nation. I wonder why.. Could it be that the liberal media is being " paid" by the alcohol/ cigarette/ club Inc.,? Nobody seems to care for the beneficial effects of the restricting the pub culture for the health and the future of our nation.

Reply to Vijay and Indian by M on 30 Jan 2009

Stop trying to go beyond your normal thinking - there are no controvesies involved here, but just some groups who wants everyone to think like their pea-brains. We are living in world where there is legitimate freedom..health issues are there no doubt, but then its always been a personal choice..smoking, drinking, etc..are personal choices, if a person think his health is deteoriating because of it, then he should make it his personal choice to stop! I'm not promoting these actions here, but dont ever ever force another person to do what they do not like, because something you wouldnt like someone to force u to do something you dont like!! remember, what goes around comes around!

Esteemed CM by Srini on 30 Jan 2009

Will someone explain to the moron Yeddyurappa that the goons did not take law into their hands - they BROKE THE LAW!

Indian cultures by Hero Vaz on 30 Jan 2009

Pub culture is better than the corruption culture of the politicians and the dirt culture of the nation that the world questions.

It's outcome of corruption and mental slavary by Sachin on 30 Jan 2009

My Dear Friend,It is easy to say that pub cultre is better than corruption. But, if observe in most of the cases these places are heaven for corruption and such money transactions. And very few lower class or middle class persons who earn money by normal way spend money on such things. So you cannot separate this culture from Corruption Culture.

PUBS by Mike on 30 Jan 2009

Where these stupid politicians live? I mean on what planet. If India wants to be financial superpower and invite a lots and lots of foreigners, they have to make changes in their culture and society. Pubs have existed for centuries in the West and have never heard to be such a big problem that they need to be shut down. These stupid politicians have nothing better to do than create unnecessary disputes. There are more pressing problems that they should be concentrating.

Narrow Minded Politicians by Nonresident on 30 Jan 2009

I live in UAE, an islamic country. Here PUBS are plenty and open to non-muslims. Women soliciting for customers is a common sight in these pubs. Police do not interfere, as long as these activities do not disturb the common man.Liqour permits are issued to residents only if they can afford to buy liquor at controlled shops. Drunken driving leads to harsh punishment. Instead of debating on PUBS, our narrow minded politicians should debate on methods to minimise the drinking habit of our poor some of whom spend 75% of their earnings on this addiction.Probably India is the only democratic country, where liqour is free flowing in one state and banned in another state. My father is an alcoholic, and never visited a PUB. I am not an alcoholic and I visit PUBS. See any logic? Every citizen has a right to choose what he wants. Politicians and Fanatics should not and cannot curtail the rights given to the citizen by the Indian constitution.

EVEN SCHOOL GIRLS ARE IN TO PUB CULTURE by n.krishna on 29 Jan 2009

The very high disparity in the IT income has adversely affected many locals and created resentment. IT staff have to put in long hours, or do night shift. This has brought insecurity to the girls who are attacked and killed in few cities. The pub culture was there earlier but the influx of the very young IT professional, induced even the local school girls and boys to go to pubs. This is causing real headache to the local population. Pub culture will induce one to go for hard liquor. Poor air quality in many pubs, is bad for the health. Many tends to drive after drinking. Bangalore 100 feet road accident should be an eye opener for those who drink and drive. It is all nice to talk of equality for girls but for that a safe and an ideal environment with civilized persons all around, is needed. Recently in Mumbai and Pune many were caught for taking drugs, yet many were unaware of drugs being distributed. So like every thing else in life a litte precaution is in order

Karnataka CM's twisted mind by Hero Vaz on 29 Jan 2009

Karnataka's BJP CM is against "pub culture". Is he against "corruption culture" in politics and the government? Is he against "dirt culture" in cities towns and villages? Is he against "lack of hygiene culture" that is all over the State? Is he aganst "indiscipline culture" that exists in all walks of life? The aswers to the questions make a sad story and reveal a screwed up sense of concerns and priorities. It is no wonder India is looked upon as dirty and backward.

There's a way ... by Baatul on 29 Jan 2009

Not all Westerners go to pub. Many also do charity, social service and above all law abiding citizen. Now, will the pub hoppers whose main aim is to copycat West try taking a different route?

STOP PUB/MALL CULTURE by PRANAB KUMAR MOITRA on 29 Jan 2009

WE MUST SUPPORT THE INDIAN CULTURE AND VALUES TO BUILD OUR CHILD WITH MORAL FOR THEIR FUTURE. ANY LUCID STEPS TO RETAIN IT SHOULD BE TAKEN. THIS IS OBVIOUS FOR ALL HUMAN BEING. SCHOOL AND COLLEGE AUTHORITIES MUST TAKE SO CORRECTIVE MEASURE FROM PREVENTING THIS UGLISM OF YOUTH. IN ORDER TO STOP IT PARENTS MUST TAKE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN. GOVERN AUTHORITIES SHOULD ALSO TAKE PROPER CARE TO STOP WESTERN PUB/MALL CULTURE. THIS WOULD DEFINITELY GIVE VALUE TO OUR STUDENTS AND YOUNG GENRATIONS.

Pub culture by GURU on 29 Jan 2009

What do Shila Dixit care about children of other people? For her revenue income from alcohol and pubs is supreme priority. She may be in her 80s, what do she care for 20 something.

WHY THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT USING POTO OR TADA ON BJP/SANGHPARIVAR/SHIVSENA/MNS/SRI RAM SENA, BECAUSE THESE ARE ALL BIGGEST TERRORIST GROUP OF INDIA AND THEIR LEADERS SHOULD BE PUT IN JAIL IMMEDIATELY. THEN ONLY THEIR WILL BE PEACE IN INDIA. WAKE UP INDIAN GOVERNMENT

Responsibility and Imitation by Sriram on 29 Jan 2009

In the West, youngsters enjoy freedom and they earn and pay for it. They do errands, earn money, buy car and if they violate a law, they themselves pay for it.Unlike in India, where youngsters enjoy their parents' money, throw their might around and when get into trouble cry like babies and then the parents wake up use their money power to buy justice.Look at Mukarran the biker 'hero'. His parents never warned or could stop him from risking not just his but others' lives on civilian roads. When he ran into trouble, instead of guiding him to surrender, they sent a car to help him to escape. When finally shot at, the parents started crying foul as if it was ALL military and police's mistakes.Seeing all this and the cultural differences we have, I support Mr Yedyurappa's statement to ban pub culture.

As Yedyurappa, Gehlot bash pubs, Shiela asks why by Derek on 29 Jan 2009

Well what about certain festivals like navratei, when the rate of oregnancies is the highest...shouldnt the government think of banning that too as it is "against our culture"? Dont make India into another the taliban run country. Well if corruption is our culture then the government is doing a good job. Well done India... keep it up and you will become the laughing stock of the world.

As Yedyurappa, Gehlot bash pubs, Shiela asks why by Suresh Rao on 29 Jan 2009

Derek , the instance of pregnancies is a figment of your imagination because Garba and dandiya are held in open maidans as a result of which phoney intellectual secularists and thugs get vicarious pleasure by forcing police to enforce ban at 10 pm. Incidentally Derek, Childrens day comes exactly nine months after Valentines day

why Pubs? Go Haldirams/Bikaner by Go Haldirams/Bikaner on 31 Jan 2009

Why does one visits a pub? Is it not for gulping sorry sipping so called BEER!!! and the so called feeling HIGH..Tell me the real value in doing that? Can you think of a pub without serving liquor? No they would all go crashing>>> So why do we go to a pub? The youngsters in the middle class are attracted of a social status in the "pub visits" and also get to know their opposite sex.We would not be inclined to visit a Haldirams or Bikaners eventhough they offer food and drinks ?( Not liqour eh?)

Hypocrat CMs by Subhash on 29 Jan 2009

Women have a right to freedom. We are in 21 century, even back in the 10 century women had their right to choose their husbands by "swanber" ,so why now this hypocracy? Can the CMs concentrate on governance ,rather than preach culture to us? What do their next of kin do ? Are they aware of that ?

pub culture : neither crows nor peakock by Vijaykumar on 29 Jan 2009

Myself is a "youngster" living in Europe. Unfortunately nowadays there are some "youngstars" are very good in mimicing the western culture - dresses, dance, nar pub..etc and they feel they are westernaized. It would not have been a problem if they also learn some good core western values like honesty, discipline, commitment, respect to others, perfectionism..etc. But unfortunately they don't. They are mostly neither crows nor peacocks -something superficial in between - stranegly developed rootless creatures.

Response to pub culture : neither crows nor peakock by Deb on 30 Jan 2009

Vijaykumar - i agree with the spirit of your email. However examples you quoted are from a different world. Perfectionism? Gimme a break, discipline yes. honesty...what?

To Vijaykumar: What are you? Crow or peakcock!! by jehush prasad on 29 Jan 2009

Why are you so worried about the fate and cultures of the "youngsters" of India? Can you give me a simple analogy between going to Pubs and "good core western values"?I am kinda lost in your statements. If someone wants to go to a pub then who are you and me to stop them as long as they dont commit any crime?I am not in favour of pubs but nobody's got the right to say what others should be doing and what they shouldnt be doing..Atleast not in a violent way like this.Kisike baap ka desh nahin hai yeh!!!
