Sunday’s no show comes on the heels of the failure of Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (double trap) and Anjali Bhagwat (10m air rifle) to reach the final of their respective events, which in turn ended their Olympics aspirations.

Omkar started off with 97 in his first card but slipped to 93 in the second. Though he hit three cards of 97, 96 and 97 during his subsequent efforts, it wasn’t good enough for him to advance.

After a 92 in his final card, including an 8 in his last shot, Omkar’s chance of earning India an Olympic quota ended. National coach Sunny Thomas wasn’t impressed with the total of 1,710 points that the Indian team bagged to finish a lowly ninth.

“Seniors were shooting as if they were beginners. It seemed they were shooting in an international tournament for the first time,” Thomas said moments after the event. “Nobody can complain that they didn’t have enough practice or they did not have enough international exposure. They can’t even complain about the weather conditions because this is an enclosed range. So there is no excuse for what happened today. It is a miserable performance,” the coach said.

Juniors shine

In contrast, the juniors had a great outing in the 10m air pistol. The trio of Akshay Jain, Vivek Kumar and Karanpreet Randhawa bagged a team bronze with a combined score of 1,701, behind China and Iran.
