The hosts were saved by skipper Younis' decision to go separately.

Lahore The Pakistan cricket team could also have fallen prey to the terror attacks carried out on the Sri Lankan players, but captain Younis Khan's decision to change the team's travel schedule came as saviour, coach Intikhab Alam said.

Alam disclosed that normally both the teams leave the hotel together for the stadium at around 8:40 am, but the hosts were saved by skipper Younis' decision to go separately.

"The Sri Lankans decided to leave five minutes early today and our captain had decided we would go separately," Alam said.

Six Sri Lankan cricketers were injured when 12 unidentified gunmen opened fire at them, killing five policemen escorting the team convoy to the Gadaffi stadium ahead of the third days play of the second Test.

He said the Pakistani players only came to know about the attack when they reached Mall road and were immediately told to return back to the hotel.

"It was a terrifying incident and we sat down together worried about the Sri Lankan players safety. Later we were able to get in touch with them and their manager," Alam said.

He said it was a black day in the history of Pakistan cricket, but still insisted that the cricket board should continue its efforts to convince international to visit the country.

"This could have happened anywhere in the world but we need to continue our efforts to convince teams it is safe to come and play in our country," he said.

PCB, Director of Human Resources, Wasim Bari said he had taken the two injured Sri Lankan cricketers to the hospital for treatment.

"Everyone co-operated a lot and they got prompt medical attention. I was also in touch with the Sri Lankan authorities. We were all concerned," he said.

Although, Bari, a former Test captain, warned that Pakistan should be prepared for tough times ahead, he urged international teams not to severe cricketing ties with the troubled nation.

"I would appeal to the other cricket playing nations not to abandon us at this moment. It is very easy to say lets not send our teams to Pakistan, but we need support and we must not be isolated as a cricket nation and international venue," he said.

"Pakistan cricket must be supported we need to move ahead. The easiest thing would be to give in to these terrorists, that is what they want, he added.

Pakistan is no more a country, its just the same as Afghanisthan and Iraq. Look at the history, only military rules have ruled formaximum time in pakistan. They need military rule to keep these unwated terrorists at large and on othe rhand the rulers are also big headache to us.

Did Younis Khan had a advance info. on attack by Shiva on 04 Mar 2009

Paki Cricket by Raju on 04 Mar 2009

What on earth is Wasim Bari trying to achieve ! Does he want other cricketing countries to stop sending their teams after some of their cricketers are killed by the pakistani terroorists. Pakistan should now form 2 teams one Pakistan and the other Talibanistan i am sure they will enjoy their cricket without being attacked by their own terrorists. They can even invite Afghanistan and have a tri-series, what fun.Wake up Mr. Wasim Bari before it's too late.

Hire Younis by Jas on 04 Mar 2009

I say, India should hire Younis to predict or smell future attacks by terrorists.

Stupid Accusation by M on 04 Mar 2009

Only the brainless moron Pakistanis will believe that the shooters were sent by India. What earthly reason does India have to targer Sri Lankan players? The Pakistanis probably thought this was the only way to save their Cricket team from a humiliating defeat. Pakistanis are not humans; they can at best be trained animals.

ACCORDING TO MY POINT OF VIEW THERE IS SOMEONE WHO TRYING TO BRAKE THE RELATIONSHIP OF INDIA AND PAKISTAN IN ORDER TO DO A WAR BETWEEN INDIA

Younis decision to travel separately saved Pak cricketers by Ramanathan Rajan on 04 Mar 2009

Was Younis tipped in advance by ISI/Let/AL quieda/Jaish jihadi groups which influenced him to travel separately from Sri Lankan players ?? Needle of suspicion should be directed towards these nefarious elements who have their sinister dialoblic designs to destablize India and trying to create a war like situation betwen India and Pakistan. Even Americans also could have been tipped well in advance for some aid or alimony by Paki jihadis.

PAKISTAN LIKE TAMIL NADU, NO CONTROL BY HEAD OF STATE. IN TN NO ONE LISTEN TO MK, IN PK NO ONE LISTEN TO ZARDARI. BOTH ARE SAME.

Younis' decision to travel separately saved us: Coach by shankar on 04 Mar 2009

A bit too pat .The whole episode smacks of some collusion at a high level between the Pak Administration and the Terrorists. Many questions will remain unanswered. But one thing is clear-that the Sri Lanka tour, hastily cobbled up in the wake of the Indian refusal to visit Pak ,was some kind of a diplomatic success to get the Lankans to tour Pak,and it would have done no good to the Pakiststanis if the terrorists were allowed to go the whole way.Hence the restrant in damages(they could have blown the bus sky high with the ammo they had). They were running amok,in full daylight in the open, without cover and for nearly a quarter of an hour in public .What then, was Pak security doing? The drama was apparently directed by the Pak Officials and played by the terrorists(or their stooges) who were allowed to escape, without being apprehended or caught. The scare that the Lankans was just to prove to the world that Pakistan is also subject to terror.Take Younis' statement with a pinch of salt.

coincidence or planned by Rhino on 04 Mar 2009

What an coincidence, this type of coincidence can happen only in Pakistan

Younis' decision to travel separately saved us: Coach by chandra on 04 Mar 2009

Is not it a bit daft or even deliberate. The Pak Administrative machinery works in mysterious ways.A call ,a command or a suggestion to one of the players to somehow delay the Pak Group's trip, albeit seemingly in an innocent manner, might be relevant.Another disconcerting factor is that the attackers were literally running amok without cover,in full daylight unlike in the Mumbai outrage. They had such an amount of destructive fire power that the bus and the occuppants could have been blown skyhigh, which the perpetrators stopped short of,leaving the few SriLankans aslightly scarred and scared.Official collusion , the trademark Pak method in recent months seems apparent.

Abysmal security in Pak by Oracle on 04 Mar 2009

If they cannot provide security why do they want to host games? This is a hugh mockery. They can provide entertainment to the rest of the world by just directly telecasting what is going on inside Pakistan. Pak is in shambles and is in danger of being taken over by terrorists.

Pak by Oracle on 04 Mar 2009

Pakistan is the scourge of the world. There is a government which is absolutely weak and the country will soon fall into the various terrorist groups. Corruption is in control and it is beyond Allah to save Pak. It has become a cesspool and embodiment of all that is vile in this world. If there is one thing that can happen for the good of the world it is that this so called "land of the pure" be levelled with nuclear bombs. Then the world can be civilized again.

Younis' decision to travel separately saved us: Coach by Chandru Narayan on 04 Mar 2009

Since Pakistan exports its terrorism everywhere it has finally come home to roost. In Pakistan IT stands for "International Terrorism", this is the only industry there is to employ the youth, the rest are in Army uniforms doing the same terrorism duty but with a legal order. Pakistan is a failed republic.

Tit for Tat- Sharia law, Pak will get justice soon by Dee on 04 Mar 2009

I am sure that they know it before hand. That's why they separated their team. Pakis - u will suffer same what u r doing to others.. Remember what goes around comes back............................................

Just a Trick by John on 04 Mar 2009

And you think we beleive the decision of Captain Younisl. I firmly believe they got heads up from terrorist group that is why they the change the plan to go separately. Pakistan is a terrorist country there is no doubt about that. I firmly believe the terrorist communicated to the Pakistan cricket team of the hit and that is why they left separately. It is just bull shit that they are saying now the his decision.

Terrorist's attacked on S.Lanka Team by Manohar on 04 Mar 2009

The question remains wheather Younis Khan got any "tip" to change his team's schedule travel at eleventh hour.PCB

Very suspicious by ISI Inside Man on 04 Mar 2009

Very suspicious move. Looks like a insider got to him. Its ridiculuous that he should be credited for that. It will soon turn out that the Pakistani team was the target instead in reply to the 11/26, and Younis saved their neck and became a hero. Who are you kidding?

Disappointing Journalism by Sivaram on 04 Mar 2009

It is sickening to see suspicions cast on players, speculation on their knowledge etc. Indian Express - You should be ashamed of this article or at least the title of the article. I'm not sure if this is published in the print media too.

Isn't it strange? by Shawn on 04 Mar 2009

I am just wondering isn't it strange that Pakistani team who normally travel with SL team did not travel with them on the day of attack?Again I am just curious why? Did the captain have a dream? Or something else?
