The accused, identified as Avinash Doke (28), was tracked on the basis of his call details, though he had registered the SIM under a false identity.
According to the investigating officials at Malad police station, Doke, who stays in the girl’s neighborhood, used to follow the girl and even tried to befriend her. Disinterested, the girl, who is preparing for her Chartered Accountant’s exams, spurned his advances and finally approached her parents.
During the last week of June, when the number of SMSes and missed calls increased to as many as 1,000 on one single day, her parents approached the police. Police arrested Doke on Friday evening and has booked him for insulting the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation.
According to the police officials, Doke used as many as 10 SIM cards to call the girl through different mobile phones. The SIM cards Doke used were reported missing and the police tracked the calls with the help of mobile service provider. “He would request a friend for using his phone for a minute. He would then use one of these SIM cards and make persistent calls to the girl,” said Assistant Police Inspector Chinaji Adhav. “Later, we also started keeping a track of the booths from where he used to make the calls,” he said.
