Vadodara, February 2: The Income Tax department has asked Zahira Sheikh, a key withess in Best Bakery riot case who was allegedly given a hefty amount by a Congress corporator to change her statement in the court, to fork out Rs 38.63 lakh as tax.

Zahira will appeal against the IT notice served by IT department here asking her to pay the tax.

On the basis of statement of Congress Corporator Chandrakant Srivastav, IT Department assessed Rs 24 lakh for 2003-04, Rs 22 lakh for 2004-05 and Rs 20 lakh for 2005-06 as Zahira's income, Mistry said.

News portal 'Tehelka' had caught Srivastav on tape claiming that he had bribed Zahira Rs 18 lakh to change her statments in the court during the Best Bakery trial.

The IT Department considered the 'Tehelka' tapes during their scrutiny and found payment of Rs one lakh as deposit to a builder to purchase a flat for Zahira in Mumbai.

The amount of Rs 1.36 lakh shown in her bank accounts could not be tallied while she had paid Rs 55,000 to purchase a house in Ektanagar in the Panigate locality of Vadodara after her Best Bakery was destroyed in post-Godhra violence on March 1, 2002 in which several people were burnt alive.

The bank accounts of Zahira, who was convicted of perjury by a special court in Mumbai for changing her statment in the court during the trial of Best Bakery casew, have been frozen by the IT Department.

Meanwhile, Zahira had come to the city on January 28 for consulting her lawyer Atul Mistry and Chartared Accountant Rajkumar Mandovara for appealing against the notice that asked her to pay tax, her lawyer said.

SO long there will be Godhra, there will be Post-Godhra too by B. B. Goel on 03 Feb 2008

Mr raj, stop fooling around. Indian muslims were expolited by almost all political parties, including Congress. It started before independence and as a result we got Pakistan and bangladesh. More than 40 million illegal muslims are living in INdia now from pakistan and B’Desh. It became possibel mainly through active support by Indian muslims. Demolition of babri, an deserted mosque, is only an expression of frsutration by common Hindus, which few political parties utilised. Do you know why Taslima Nasreen is kept under house arrest while all the Muslim and other religious and political leaders who abused and threatened her is raoming scot free? Unless Muslim appeasement is stopped and sincere efforts are undertaken to bring them into national main stream, incidents like Godhr and Post-Godhra will hapen.

Please investigate, thoroughly by a proud Indian Muslim on 03 Feb 2008

May be Zahira HAD THIS MONEY FROM ISI Pakistan?? worth investigating, so the Muslims of India will not fell guilty

Evidence in Best Bakery case by Cogito_ergo... on 04 Feb 2008

HEAR HEAR!!Even today, I am puzzled how our Courts of Law could have allowed the "evidence" -- one way or the other -- presented by Zahira in the Best Bakery case.

Hindu Fanaticism and Extremism by raj shanti on 03 Feb 2008

Mr Jitu This has been wrong notion and propaganda perpetuated by Hindu fanatics of India that the Muslims community is only 12% and is the one who starts the riots on the slight pretext in India although it is the other way round. Who demolished the Babri Masjid first and engineered riots in Mumbai and UP?? Who killed the Sikhs in 1984 after the killing of Indira Ghandi?? Who killed our Father of Nation and then engineered riots in 1948. Who started the fire from inside in the Godra train in Gujrat and blamed the Muslims and killed them subsequently. Who started the riots in Bhagal pur and Bhiwandi and keep refusing to table various commissions viz Sri krishna commission etc. It is all by Hindus bigots and extremist elements. Now stop fooling yr self and learn to accept the facts.

Zahira Sheikh asked to pay up Rs 18 lakh as tax by vaman on 03 Feb 2008

So, now IT will rely on anybody's verbal statement to servce notice on another person to pay income tax. If I say, Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav's income is Rs. 50 crores, INcome Tax will go and serve notice to him to pay income tax on that basis. Very funny?

Zaheera Shaikh by raj shanti on 03 Feb 2008

This always happen to the member of minority community in India. First they are labelled traitors and then killed in riots for political expediency and then tried under false cases to keep their mouth shut to save the skins of Hindu fanatics and extremist. I think even Zaheera Shaikh deserve to be punished for her gullibility as she has compromised on the killing of her family members during the riots and sold her integrity and honesty for the greed of the money. She should have fought her case like the Bilkees Bano did to bring to the books and justice the Hindu bigots who engineered Godhra train burning and subsequent riots and killing of Muslims in Gujrat in 20002.

Muslim Fanaticism - 12% holding the entire nation to ransom by jitu on 03 Feb 2008

The minority community in india is more often the perpetuator of voilence than the victim. They are the ones who resort to voilence on the slightest pretext and try to influence foreign policy by threatening voilent agitations and terrorism. Its a case of 12% muslims holding the entire country to ransom with their fanaticism. They are the ones who manipulate facts to downplay islamic fanaticism and terrorism as a reaction to hindu volience, whenm it is in fact the other way round. And lastly, use your real name when posting comments instead of a hinsu name.
