Zandu reaches last eight

Kolkata, April 8 Jamshedpur boy Manraj Singh Zandu stormed into the quarter finals of Boys’ Singles Under-12 ousting fourth seed Purushottam Dash of Orissa at the Tata Steel-SV Impact AITA Talent Series Tennis Championship 2008 at Jamshedpur today.

Manraj played some brilliant tennis and relied on passing winners to defeat the much higher ranked Purushottam 6-3, 6-0. Md Shaharyar Salim and Mukesh umar Sharma were the other winners today.

Others to complete the quarter final line up are top seed Avilash Mishra of Orissa, second seed Arjun Patnaik of Andhra, third seed Ishaque Eqbal of Kolkata, sixth seed Shakti Ray of Orissa and unseeded Anubhav Tirath Lal of Kolkata.

In the Boys’ Singles Under-14 Shuvam Roy of Kolkata upset the sixth seeded Jamshedpur boy, Md. Shaharyar Salim in a match which went the full distance. Both the players matched their wits point for point. In the end Roy prevailed 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Rest of the seeds had an easy passage to the quarter-finals.

In the Girls’ Singles Under-14 the three Jamshedpur girls to reach the quarter finals are Suchi Smita Pani, Sushmita Paul and Sushmita Vishwakarma. Sushmita Paul made short work of Shweta Sen from Kolkata 6-1, 6-1. Suchi Smita Pani beat statemate Nishi Jaiswal 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarters.
