Chandigarh, January 24 The city today witnessed the coldest day of the season with the mercury dipping to a freezing zero degree celsius. The cold wave had been persisting for the past many days with the temperature hovering over a little above one degree.

The city had experienced zero degree temperature last year on January 6. Before that the temperature had fallen to zero degree on February 2, 1974.

Everywhere people could be seen basking in the sun, which provided some respite from the chill. School children could be seen bearing the brunt of the harsh winter.

Says Neha, a student of Class V, “I found it so difficult to get out of my quilt in the morning and dress up for school. It was terrible to wait for the school bus. My hands were also freezing making it difficult to write anything.”

If the children had a hard time, those going to offices in the morning did not get much relief either. The two-wheeler drivers especially faced a hard time.

Those without a roof over their heads were the worst sufferers. They managed to brave the chill with bonfires.

Met officials have predicted that there would be some respite from the cold wave in the coming days. They have predicted a rise in night temperature.
