Mumbai ‘Missing’ witness returns, blames it on media

26/11 Witness Anita Udaiyya, who had gone ‘missing’ from her home at Badhwar Park on Sunday, returned home in the early hours of Monday and claimed that she had gone to her brother’s house in Satara to avoid the media glare.

Udaiyya told Newsline that she had “gone out of town” and had returned to her Machimar Colony residence at Cuffe Parade at 1.30 am. However, she refused to reveal more details of her trip.

The Cuffe Parade police, who were investigating the complaint filed by Udaiyya’s family, said she had visited the station and recorded her statement shortly after her arrival.

“Udaiyya said in her statement that the media has been after her ever since it became public that she is a witness to the terror attacks. In order to escape the media glare, she had gone away to her brother’s house in Satara,” said police sub-inspector Sunil Vipat. However, he refused to comment on the rumours that had been circulating about her whereabouts over the past couple of days.

Udaiyya was reportedly one of the first witnesses to see the terrorists alighting from a rubber dinghy and she had also identified the bodies of some of the terrorists after being summoned by the Crime Branch.

Udaiyya had gone missing from her home on Sunday morning. She had visited her husband, who is admitted to the St George Hospital, and told him that she would be gone for a couple of days.
