It's a new year and it’s time to give your old trees too a new lease of life. Old trees that become too high and dense joining each other become unproductive and whatever fruit they bear near the top is out of bound and is eaten by birds only. To start afresh, head back old trees at eight to ten feet above ground. You may not get fruit from the next few years; say three to four years and then the bearing will be excellent, well within your reach and also within bound for plant protection measures. See the accompanying picture. The tree is headed at the lighted area.

* There is a very good quality mulberry tree growing near the house of a friend. How can I get a similar tree? Can I multiply it by cuttings?
Simran, Chandigarh
Yes, you can multiply it by way of cuttings. The success rate is almost cent percent. Make nine-ten inches long cuttings and insert three fourth in soil. Keep the medium moist. The cuttings will start in a few days. Do not disturb them till next year when they will go dormant, ready for transplanting.

* Can you suggest two trees that are aesthetically beautiful and have medicinal properties too?
Raminder Kaur, Mohali
Amaltas and Lahura are two such trees.

* I have two six-year-old Kinnow trees. Last year they had good fruit. What should I do to get good fruit this year too?
Manisha, Panchkula
First thing is removal of dead and dried wood from the tree. Add two full baskets of well rotten farmyard manure. Also add 30 grams of zinc sulphate in soil along with manure.

* Which is the best time to multiply roses? Can I plant my roses now? Can you suggest a few red, yellow and white roses?
Sumit, Chandigarh
Yes you can multiply and plant new roses now. Some of the red roses are ‘Christian Dior’, ‘Dr B P Pal’, ‘Happiness’, ‘Super Star’ and ‘Oklahoma’. The yellow rose varieties are ‘Buccaneer’, ‘Yellow Giant’ and white roses are ‘Ice-berg’ and ‘Summer Snow’.
