Chandigarh, February 24 An Accused in a kidnapping case escaped from the custody of Chandigarh Police in Nabha. Manoj Kumar alias Matty, was lodged in Burail jail for kidnapping Nikhil Joshi, son of auto-dealer Deepak Joshi of Joshi Auto Zone Limited.

Manoj and his friend Honey Sharma were arrested on November 20, 2005 on charges of kidnapping Nikhil Joshi and demanding ransom.

UT Police had claimed that they had found three pistols, 15 live cartridges, a set of handcuffs, three dog chains, a mobile phone and two Motorola walkie-talkie sets with a 7-kilometre range in the duo’s possession.

According to police, Manoj had appealed in a local court here, asking for permission to visit his mother, who, he said, had not been keeping well. Manoj was allowed to meet his mother.

A team of two head constables and a constable, posted at Police Lines, Chandigarh took Manoj to Nabha Open Jail, where his mother was staying. His father was a jail superintendent in Muktsar.

The police party reached Nabha around 11 am on Sunday. Manoj went to meet his mother and the policemen accompanying started chatting with some people. When Manoj did not come out of the room for some time, policemen went inside only to find that he had escaped.

A case has been registered at Nabha Police Station.

Said UT SSP S S Srivastava, “I have come to know that Manoj has escaped from custody. A case has been registered at Nabha. The matter is under investigation. As far as the involvement of our men is concerned, we are probing into the matter. However, departmental action will be taken against policemen who were in charge of Manoj’s custody”.
