New Delhi The final countdown has begun. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3 (T3), India’s largest and one of the world’s most modern airport terminals, on July 3. From July 15, all international flights from the airport will shift to the new terminal. Domestic full cost carriers, together with their low-cost concerns, will begin operations from the new terminal building on July 31.

National carrier Air India will, however, shift to the new building a day in advance, on July 14. The New York-Delhi AI 102 is expected to be the first flight to arrive at Terminal 3 at 4.45 pm on July 14. About two hours later, the Delhi-Dubai AI 895 will make the first departure from the terminal.

“Other international carriers will start the shifting process on July 14 itself, and be ready for operations from the new terminal on July 15. Domestic carriers, including Kingfisher, Kingfisher Red, Jet, Jet Konnect and JetLite will start the shifting process on July 30, and start operations from Terminal 3 on July 31,” a DIAL official said.

T2, the existing international terminal, which has served international travellers to and from Delhi for over 25 years, will be kept in operational readiness as a backup for Terminal 3. Expecting a huge inflow of passengers during the Games, T2 will be available in case of any contingency.

The existing domestic departures terminal, T1D, will cater to low-cost carriers IndiGo, SpiceJet and Go Air, at least till the Commonwealth Games. “There are plans to convert T1D into an exclusive general aviation facility after the Games,” an official said.

On July 30, GoAir will shift to T1D from T1A. The 30-year-old T1A, which caters to domestic departures of Air India and low-cost carrier GoAir at present, is likely to be converted into the Haj Terminal after the Games. The present Haj Terminal, much closer to the cargo terminals, will become an extension of the existing cargo terminal.

Terminal 3, getting its final touches now, aspires to convert Delhi’s international airport into a major transit hub at the international as well as domestic levels, taking India several notches up on the global aviation stage. Constructed in a record time of 37 months, the terminal offers a capacity to handle 60 million passengers every year.

Indian Airports and the fish market by Desi Doc on 03 Jul 2010

The new Terminal will open and so will it's fish market. The loud speakers will turned on to maximum volume and every flight there will be the 'PROCEED TO SECURITY announcement' FIRST call ... SECOND call.... And three FINAL calls.... ANNOUNCEMENTS as well at least one DEPARTURE ANNOUNCEMENT in Hindi and and English.....I wonder who is interested in the 'departure of the flight announcement? There passengers are already on the departed flight. And why should there be so many announcements? Airports all over the world have minimum announcements on the PA systems...the Indian airports are the loudest airports in the world....even the Goa fish market is less noisy. lOOK PEOPLE COME WITH TICKETS AND THEY DO NOT WANT TO MISS THEIR FLIGHT AND THEY WON'T...THE PASSENGERS ARE SMARTER THAN THE AIRPORT ANNOUNCEMENTS. And if they miss their flight they are to blame themselves. They don't miss their their trains and buses, do they??and lets pray, DEAR GOD. PLEASE LET US HAVE CLEAN TOILETS!!
