Kolkata In a bid to inculcate scientific temper and mathematical ability among students in madrasas, the state government will organise a Madrasa Mathematics Olympiad and Madrasa Science Talent Search Examination across the state.

Aliah University, the first Muslim university in the state, has been entrusted with the responsibility of organising the olympiad and the talent search for the first time this year.

According to Vice-Chancellor of Aliah University Syed Shamshul Alam, the examination will be conducted in October this year. The test will be applicable for Class VIII and X students. The examination will be held at three centres — Kolkata, South Bengal and North Bengal. “We are organising the talent search and the olympiad on the similar

lines of National Talent Search Examination organised by NCERT and Mathematics Olympiad conducted by Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. The idea is to generate interest among the students in madrasas across the state for mathematics and science,” said Alam. Four hundred students will be selected from across the state. Two hundred students from each class (Class VIII and X) will be selected.

“Along with certificates and opportunities to participate in another competition, we will ensure scholarship for the selected students,” said Alam. According to the V-C, a budget of nearly Rs1 crore has been set aside for this purpose.

“We are trying an amalgamation of tradition and modern education in the madrasa education system the state. When it comes to modern education, we are giving importance to science and mathematics, building more laboratories in madrasas. With this talent search, more students can get into higher education.
