Ludhiana Lakhbir Kaur of Babelpur village, Faridkot, was in severe pain in her right hand. Her main artery supplying the upper limb was trapped at its origin in the neck by an abnormal bone known as cervical rib. She was first seen and diagnosed by Dr Arora of Arora Neuro centre who realising the gravity of the situation immediately referred her to Dr Harinder Singh Bed, Chairman, CardioVascular Sciences at Sigma New Life Heart Institute.

Dr Bedi explained that a cervical rib was a very rare anomaly which causes damage to the nerves and blood vessels of the hand. "If untreated it can cause the hand to be severely damaged and gangrenous. The area of origin is very complicated and has a number of vital structures supplying the hand and the brain in a very small place. A wrong incision by even a few millimeters can cause irreversible damage during surgery."

Dr Bedi is the only member of the Vascular Society from Punjab and has a Limca World record in vascular surgery. But even in his 20 years of practice, including at the Escorts Heart Delhi and in Australia where he has worked, he has treated only six such cases. To be dure of the region's anatomy, he requested help from Dr A Thomas - Director of CMC Ludhiana - who very kindly allowed Dr Bedi permission to study the area in the anatomy section of CMC along with Dr Sikka of the department.

After a detailed study in the well-equipped anatomy wing, Dr Bedi carried out the complex surgery on Lakhbir Kaur at Sigma New Life hospital . The vital structures were carefully dissected out and the abnormal rib removed without damaging any of the normal tissues. Anesthesia for this marathon case was given by Dr A Gupta. Lakhbir is now free of pain and her hand is functioning normally.

Dr Bedi stressed the importance of taking help from other specialists in the management of complicated diseases. Dr Thomas said that dissemination of knowledge by inter-institutional cooperation was an ideal and scientific way to give the best possible treatment to the people of Punjab.
