The construction work at the site is being done by K S Chamankar Enterprise. Though work on the 7,000 sq mt area is currently behind schedule, however, officials believe it will be done by the end of the year. “The work is now progressing rapidly and as per our estimate it’ll be ready by the end of this year,” said Vikas Pandkar, Regional Transport Officer, West. Construction of pillars on the marshy land of the office was causing major hurdles to engineers. “Due to the soft nature of the soil and marshland we had to dig deep for firm land to start construction of the pillars,” said an engineer requesting anonymity.

At present, the RTO office is divided in four barracks that deal with over 5,000 people daily. There is also a huge open space with impounded vehicles stacked in a corner. “The main office building will have ground plus three storeys. Two buildings adjoining it will house the staff and officers from RTO. There will also be a basement for parking. Public convenience is of prime concern to us. The new building will have ample seating and better toilets. Also, all the departments that deal with day-to-day needs of the public will be housed on the ground floor,” Pandkar added.
