Treat yourself to French film director
Alain Resnais's cinema

The French have a old connection with renaissance. They both go hand in hand, especially, the visionary, the thinker, and the maker. Alain Resnais was one of them. In the 1950s, he was what they termed him as 'leader of the nouvelle vague' (new wave) movement. A French film director, Alain was known for his unorthodox and controversial films. Some of his best works are the earlier ones, those which deal with themes of memory and trauma. The French Embassy and The Alliance Française are bringing to town a slice of Resnais cinema in the Alain Resnais Film Festival, starting February 11 at the Alliance Francaise, Sector 36, Chandigarh.

Watch out for his comedy, On connaît la chanson / Same old song, where most original feature of this "musical" is that characters break into songs as sung by the original artists. When we say new wave, then Resnais's Hiroshima Mon Amour, a love story between a French woman and a Japanese man is notable for its innovative use of flashbacks. There's Muriel ou le temps d'un retour / Muriel and then Stavisky, a 1974 French film drama based on a true story surrounding a 1934 political scandal known as the Stavisky Affair, which led to fatal riots in Paris, the resignation of two prime ministers and a change of government. FYI: all the films have English subtitles, and the festival is on till February 14.
