A win proves not enough

Mumbai, March 3 Sometimes even a win is not enough. That is what happened to the Don Bosco, Matunga’s under-12 hockey ‘B’ team at the St Stanislaus ground on Monday. A goal that came in each half was not enough for them to get a place in the play-offs of the MSSA hockey tournament.

But the end result did not disappoint many parents who had come to see their children win as one said, “It’s good to go home with a smile.” On his part, coach Javed Sayed also looked satisfied with the boys’ performance and is looking forward to start a hockey recreation camp for children. However, he has his fingers crossed and says, “Let’s see how many children turn up for the camp.”

Don Bosco’s football coach, Leslie Machado is already running a football recreation camp on weekends for Bosco and the nearby schools and the camp is quite a hit. Sayed is also looking forward to a big turn out. He adds, “This will also help the Bosco players to play and practice with other school children.”

The coach is satisfied that their under-14 team have won all the tournaments in this season and their under-10 both ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams entered the next round.

Also their under-12 ‘A’ team entered the next round, but it is only the ‘B’ team had to exit early.

However, the thought of not entering the next round did not deter the players from playing their hearts out in the match on Monday.

Most of the time the ball was in the Bosco half, but there were fine saves by the Sacred Heart goalkeeper Trident Pereira.

In the 15th minute Shannon Nogueira struck to give his team 1-0 lead. Bosco had a chance to double the lead off a penalty corner but it was cleared by the Sacred Heart ‘keeper. In the second half, Bosco’s Jason D’Cunha scored the second goal early in the 24th minute to consolidate their win.
