Kolkata The introduction of two express trains to Digha, a popular sea resort, has attracted a record number of tourists this year, say members of the Digha Hoteliers Association. Nearly 10,000 tourists from Kolkata thronged the seaside destination this year, claims the Association.

After taking charge as Railways Minister, Mamata Banerjee introduced two express trains connecting Howrah and Digha.

In addition, another train connecting Digha and New Jalpaiguri was introduced to bring in tourists from North Bengal.

“Now a section of tourists reach Digha in the morning and spend the entire day, following which they board their home-bound trains in the evening. Better railway connectivity has added to the convenience of tourists,” said Pranab Kar, president of Digha Hoteliers Association.

Earlier, there was only one train connecting Digha and Shalimar station on a daily basis. He added that the 250-odd hotels in Old and New Digha can accommodate nearly 4,000 tourists.

On the choc-a-bloc state of hotels here, Tarun Haldar, SDPO Contai, said: “The hotels in Digha are filled with tourists.”

The Digha police have, meanwhile, deployed nearly 125 personnel at Digha to manage the rush and maintain law and order.

Sisiri Adhikary, Trinamool MP from Contai, said that he held a meeting with hotel owners on Thursday to ensure that tourists receive every possible benefit.
