Patiala, March 4 Two constables were transferred to police lines for their alleged involvement in drug trade in the city.

Sources said the duo — Paramjit Singh and Daljit Singh, who worked as a munshi at Dakala Police Post and at Balberha Police Post ¿ tried to eliminate the cases against a few drug peddlers who were arrested for smuggling contrabands to the city.

“One of the constables tried to use his connections within the department to help the arrested smugglers that were caught by a team from Samana,” a source told Newsline.

Senior officials alleged that the two constables were making money from the smugglers and helping them in selling drugs that they brought from Haryana.

“Opium and poppy husk are in great demand in the city and its outskirts. We have got enough evidence about their involvement. They were not only providing a cover to the criminals but they were also trying to intervene into the probe,” a senior official said.

Patiala superintendent of police (H) Narjinder Singh Sekhon said: “Though the duo has been sent to police lines, departmental action will also be taken if the charges against them are found to be true. A departmental inquiry has been initiated against them.
