Mumbai Paying tribute to slain assistant sub-inspector Tukaran Omble, who died after being shot in Girgaum Chowpatty, veteran actor and theatre personality Manoj Joshi has announced he would hand over the proceeds from his directorial debut play Chanakya to the grieving family.

The contribution of Rs 1 lakh will be handed over to Omble’s family on January 24 at the premiere of Chanakya, a historical play based on the life of Vishnugupt, the Machiavellian Brahmin of Takshilla.

Manoj said, “My heart swells with nationalist pride when I look back at the sacrifice made by Omble. It’s a grave loss for all of us and the entire nation stands by Omble’s family. As a tribute to his martyrdom, I wish to give a token of Rs 1 lakh — the proceeds from the first show of Chanakya — to his family.

“It’s time for the politicians in India to refer to Arthashastra — an epic written by Chanakya. It gives an insight on grave issues like terrorism. The book has got well-laid principles on diplomacy, internal security measures etc to counter the menace of terrorism,” Manoj said.

Chanakya, written by Mihir Bhuta, was first staged 10 years ago. Staged in Gujarati and Hindi languages, the play has had over 400 shows with Manoj portraying the authoritative character of Chanakya.
