The issue has even invoked the intervention of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) that has summoned all the records from the UT Administration pertaining to the appointment of Krishanjeet as UT Chief Engineer.
According to sources, UT Advisor Pradip Mehra had strongly objected to Krishanjeet’s appointment after the latter had figured in the ‘Agreed List’ of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Sources with the Chandigarh Administration claim that Mehra had even questioned Krishanjeet’s ‘integrity’. UT Administrator General S F Rodrigues, however, overruled Mehra’s objection and approved Krishanjeet’s appointment as Chief Engineer.
Mehra, who was not in town when the appointment orders of Krishanjeet were issued, has refused to comment on the issue.
Krishanjeet was appointed as UT Chief Engineer nearly two months ago after former acting Chief Engineer S K Jaitley was hospitalised following an accident. Krishanjeet, who was initially given an officiating charge, was later appointed as Chief Engineer.
On the reported controversy, Krishanjeet said: “I don’t have any such information. No officer has asked me anything in this regard.”
Sources speculate that the removal of four other officials of the Chandigarh Administration from ‘sensitive’ postings on the orders of UT Advisor Pradip Mehra is likely to stir up differences among the top-brass of the Administration.
It was last week on Friday that Mehra had ordered the transfer of four officials of the Administration from ‘sensitive postings’, after they had also figured in the CBI’s ‘Agreed List’.
The four include: R P Gupta, Executive Engineer posted in MC on deputation, R S Sangwan, posted as Registrar, Cooperative Societies; AS Maini, Sub-Divisional Officer, Building Branch and Vinod Sharma, Assistant Secretary, State Transport Authority.
What is an Agreed List?
An ‘Agreed List’ is maintained by the Central Bureau of Investigation in consonance with the government departments, which include the names of those government officials, who are put under surveillance on the basis of suspicion. The officials’ daily activities, including phone-calls, bank accounts and other financial transactions are monitored by the CBI and the concerned departments. An annual meeting is held between the CBI and senior officials of the government departments, where the list carrying names of such ‘suspicious’ government officials are included. The next meeting is scheduled to be held in March. “There are around 10 to 12 officials of the Chandigarh Administration and the Chandigarh Police, who figure in the Agreed List. The officials, who have completed their three years’ tenure on deputation, are immediately repatriated without considering them for any further extension, which happened in the case of these four officials,” said a senior UT Administration official while adding that those officials who are yet to complete their tenure are removed from ‘sensitive’ postings.
