Chandigarh The UT Administration’s plan of an underground parking at the cost of Rs 6 crore at Hotel Mountview has been shelved. The Board of Governors of the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Corporation (CITCO), which is managing the hotel, had approved the plan last year.

The main lobby and reception area, which were being given a face-lift for the past four months, will open to the public on January 25. The parking space, however, remains the same and can cater to only 60-70 cars in its two parking lots.

A K Malhotra, General Manager, CITCO, said: “The plan to expand the parking area has indeed been shelved. However, we are planning to create additional parking space on the front side of the hotel, next to the front lawns by retaining green spaces. Tenders for the expansion of the parking area are expected to be floated in the coming month.”

The hotel has always been facing serious parking problems, especially during the peak season. According to CITCO’s ambitious proposal, the basement parking was to be constructed beneath the front lawns of the hotel in 56,000 sq feet of area to accommodate 175 cars along with a separate segment for two-wheelers. Of the total Rs 10 crore proposed to be spent on Mountview’s expansion and renovation, Rs 6 crore was set aside in the estimates for the underground parking.
