The faculty members, who have contributed in the research, are Prof R K Kohli, Dr Daizy Rani Batish and Dr Harminder Singh.
Agro forestry implies combining agricultural and forestry techniques to help in tackling the problems of climate change, ecosystem degradation, declining agricultural productivity and food security.
Dr Kohli said, “Farmers want profits. It is beneficial to grow trees and crops together. They can also sell the produce from trees. In many places in the state, poplar tree is grown with crops.”
He adds, “The trees also prevent damage to the crops. They can act as barriers and protect the crops from chilly winter winds or excessive sun light.”
Dr Harminder said that trees help in maintaining ecological cycle. “Trees also act as nitrogen fixers, aiding in the growth of crops. Even if the agricultural productivity is less, it can be compensated with the produce from trees,” he said.
