Mumbai, January 31 All through February 1 and 2, all railway reservation booking centres will stay open till 10 pm following a decision taken by Central Railway and Western Railway keeping in view an expected increase in the rush of passengers for reservations. The railways are preparing for large crowds of passengers due to the Union Railway Ministry’s decision to increase the advance reservation period from 60 days to 90 days prior to the date of journey. The advance reservation period of 90 days will be applicable from February 1.

This extension of the advance reservation period was attempted six months ago too, but was withdrawn owing to various problems in the railway reservation system.

“With the enforcement of this decision again, some passengers are very upset. There will be booking of tickets for May 1 on February 1 itself. And tokens for making reservations on February 1 were given on January 31,” said one official. Another official opined that this was a smart move by the ministry to rake in additional revenue before the end of the financial year.

“All 42 counters will be opened at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus—usually only 22 booking windows are kept open. Central Railway has made several arrangements for coping with the rush. Extra police force is deputed too,” said Public Relations Officer of Central Railway A K Jain.
