AFMC: 103 medical graduates commissioned into service

Pune A total of 103 medical graduates were commissioned into the Armed Forces Medical Services at the Passing Out Parade held at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) today. Lt Gen Yogendra Singh, DGAFMS Senior Colonel Commandant, AMC commissioned 84 male and 19 lady doctors into the AFMC.

The parade was commanded by Med Cdt Harleen Chopra. She became the first woman cadet ever to command a Passing Out Parade in the history of the Indian Armed Forces. Chopra had joined the AFMC in 2004. She hails from Ludhiana, Punjab. The Graduate Wing of the AFMC was established on August 4, 1962.

The 16 newly commissioned officers will join the ranks of 5,444 graduates of AFMC, who have excelled in the medical profession all over the world.

Lt Gen Yogendra DGAFMS awarded the President’s Gold Medal, Kalinga Trophy and 41 other trophies, prizes and medals to recognise outstanding achievement in academics and all round performance by undergraduates.

The President’s Gold Medal was awarded to Med Cdt Gurpreet Kaur. This year, out of the 43 academic awards, as many as 28 have been won by women cadets.

AFMC has also inducted six outstanding sportspersons into the college Hall of Fame on Thursday in the diamond jubilee year of the College. Lt Gen Yogendra Singh, DGAFMS Senior Colonel Commandant, Army Medical Corps (AMC) inaugurated the Hall of Fame. The six illustrious alumni include Ved Prakash Dhand, a national level body builder, S Kirtane, who represented Maharashtra in Ranji Trophy, Yogendra Singh, who represented India at the South Asian Games in Colombo in 1970 and won the Gold Medal in Triple Jump and also represented the country at the Indo German athletics meet in 1970.
