A total of 103 medical graduates will be commissioned into the armed forces medical services at the passing out parade. Lt Gen Yogendra Singh, Director General, Armed Forces Medical Services will be the chief guest. Chopra hailse hails from Ludhiana, Punjab. “Her selection for the coveted command of the most important ceremony of the year at AFMC bears testimony to the place earned by women in the armed forces,” says Col A Rudra, spokesperson of the AFMC. She joined AFMC in 2004. According to Lt Gen Shiv Kumar Sharma, Director and Commandant, AFMC, out of 103 newly commissioned officers, 84 will join the Army, 4 will join the Air Force and 15 will join the Navy. Women have been serving in the Armed Forces Medical Services with distinction and the selection of Chopra to command the parade was made entirely on her meritorious achievements.Maj Gen Gautam Ravindranath, Dean and Deputy Commandant, said that the Graduate Wing of the AFMC was established on Aug 4, 1962. This year, in the recently concluded Maharashtra University Of Health Sciences (MUHS) examinations, students of AFMC scored a cent per cent pass percentage in first year MBBS, second year MBBS, and third year MBBS (Part - I) and 96.87% in III MBBS (Part - II). Lt Gen Yogendra Singh will award the President’s Gold Medal, Kalinga Trophy and 41 other trophies, prizes and medals, to recognise outstanding achievements in academics and all round performance by undergraduates. The President’s Gold Medal will be awarded to medical cadet Gurpreet Kaur. This year, out of 43 academic awards, as many as 28 have been won by women cadets.
