Lucknow, February 22 The 10-month-long captivity of Raghuvendra Singh came to an end on Friday, following the killing of his kidnapper Raju alias Azab in a police encounter in Jalaun district of UP.

Singh was kidnapped on April 16 last year from his village Padi under the Kalpi police station of Jalaun.

On Friday, a police team of Jalaun district killed Raju and his accomplice Manish Kadere.

The police also recovered six rifles, two SBBL guns, one countrymade pistol and 17 live cartridges from the site of the encounter.

Brij Lal, Additional Director General of Police (STF) told The Indian Express that money-lending business of Singh’s father led to his abduction.

“His father Majboot Singh was a landlord who also lent money to villagers. In case, the villagers failed to repay the loan, he got their land registered in his name.

It was alleged that Raju was one of the victims. In retaliation, Raju kidnapped his son.”

According to Lal, besides Singh, one Dr Vinod Katiya was also released from the clutches of Raju’s gang.

“Both were injured in the firing. The criminals’ bullet hit them. But their condition is said to be out of danger,” Lal added.

After his release, Singh told the policemen that both his hands and legs were tied with chain everyday.

“Despite getting about Rs 2.5 lakh as ransom, gang leader Raju had not released him,” he said.
