Mumbai, September 18 Two days after a paver block side-strip at the Saat Rasta near Mahalaxmi caved in claiming three lives, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters was abuzz with ‘politics on paver blocks’. While elected representatives slammed the use of paver blocks and demanded two-minute condolence for the victims, the civic administration countered it by saying that the same corporators had demanded the conversion of cement concrete roads into paver blocks.

The discussion on the paver blocks and its poor quality dominated the general body meeting of the civic body on Thursday. “The paver blocks are just like quick fix cosmetic surgery and do not have long life. They have become death gallows. The officials who favoured the use of low-quality paver blocks should be identified soon,” said BJP leader Bhalchandra Shirsat.

However, replying to the queries and protest of the corporators, Additional Municipal Commissioner, R A Rajeev said the civic administration had received a number of letters from the corporators demanding the conversion of CC roads into paver blocks. “As many as 165 letters are with my department,” he said.

While, many corporators said the paver blocks should not be laid on the complete length of main roads and internal roads, the BMC said the delay in getting permission from the traffic department to carry out the work of CC road forced them to use paver blocks. Rajeev said the work of the CC roads was to be carried out at 240 sites. “However, at two roads in Vile Parle and Borivali, we had to go ahead with the use of paver blocks as there was a delay in traffic department’s approval.”

Corporators, however, expressed their dissatisfaction with the low-quality and ill-maintained paver blocks. “The paver blocks at the Scion Circle is already sunk below the ground level and the junction can cave in at any moment. Despite informing the ward officer and civic officials, no action has been initiated,” said Upendra Doshi.

The BMC has now assured the corporators that paver block will be laid only where it’s necessary. “As per the STAC committee guidelines framed in July 2008, paver blocks will be used at side strips — where utility cables are laid — and on the road junction,” Rajeev said.
