The police said the four had fled on two motorcycles after an attempt to snatch the necklace from a woman who had gone to offer prayers at the Siddhi Vinayak Temple near Shivaji Park. She immediately called the police control room and informed the cops, giving the description of the four young men.
As per the Mahim police, Pathan and some other cops were near Mahim Traffic police chowky when they received the call from the control room about the four men seen speeding towards direction of Bandra.
A short while later, the cops saw the two bikes coming towards them and the description of the men matched with that given by the control room. They were signalled to stop, but one of the bikers accelerated instead and crashed into sonstable Ghulam Khan Pathan, police said.
Pathan suffered injuries on the head, waist and knees, but he managed to cling on to a pillion rider’s shirt.
“I got hold of the shirt of the pillion rider, causing the biker to lose his balance. They fell down and we apprehended them,” Pathan said. The other two were intercepted some distance away by other cops.
The four have been booked under several sections of the Indian Penal Code for rash and negligent driving, causing hurt and endangering the life of a public servant to prevent him from discharging his duty.
A local magistrate remanded them to judicial custody till February 9.
