Municipal Commissioner Pravinsinh Pardeshi said this will require a study of the entire traffic scenario and the state of roads. “As of now, we are concentrating on cycle tracks. But since the suggestion has come, we will do a thorough study and introduce two-wheeler tracks wherever possible,” he said.

Pardeshi said to reduce two-wheeler mishaps, one way was to discourage personalised vehicles by improving the public transport system. Certain roads will soon be identified to convert them into two-wheeler tracks.

Prashant Inamdar, convener of Pedestrians First, has written to the municipal commissioner pressing for introduction of two-wheeler tracks. Quoting last week’s Indian Express report, Inamdar said two-wheeler riders face grave danger on roads as 224 died in 211 city accidents in 2008, almost half the total road deaths. By contrast, 22 cyclists were killed in 21 accidents. “There is a 25 per cent increase in the number of two-wheeler fatalities compared to 2007,” the letter said.

Two-wheeler tracks are already in existence in states like Rajasthan. “Such a requirement is definitely there, especially on highways, bypass roads and also roads on the outskirts that link the city to highways. A large share of vehicles here are trucks, trailers, containers, tankers, state transport buses and large Volvo luxury buses being driven at high speeds,” he said.

DCP (traffic) Manoj Patil said in view of the high density of two-wheeler population (17 lakh in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad) and narrow road widths, two-wheeler tracks looks impractical. “If it can be done on roads wide enough, we have no problem. It will help bring discipline,” he said.

Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal commissioner Asheesh Sharma said it won’t be possible to create two-wheeler tracks as it will compound the traffic scenario. However, he will discuss with the DCP (traffic) to see if the plan can be implemented.
