Chandigarh Swift action by fire-fighters helped avert a major tragedy on Saturday. After an LPG cylinder caught fire in house number 4067 in Sector 37, the firemen took only 15 minutes to douse the flames. It was, later, found that 845 litres of petrol had been stored in the house in tins and small drums. “Had the fire spread, the inferno would have engulfed seven to eight houses,” said a fire official.

The house owner Paramjeet Singh, a driver who was suspended two years ago from the Narcotics Control Bureau, and his son Maninder sustained burns in the incident. Doctors at the PGI stated Paramjeet’s condition to be critical.

“It seems that the LPG cylinder in the kitchen was leaking and the gas caught fire when a matchstick was lit. A refrigerator, cooler, bed and a few electronic items were destroyed in the fire,” said a fire official.

Station House officer of the Sector-39 police station, Inspector Janak Rana, said: “We have registered a case against Paramjeet Singh for storing inflammable material without permission. Investigations are on to trace from where he procured such a large quantity of petrol.” The petrol containers have been seized.
