Mumbai After assuring the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) of supplying additional water, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has refused to provide 150 mld water to the civic body. The BMC will now seek the additional water from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in order to provide relief to the parched city.

Owing to the shortage of drinking water, the BMC had sought 250 mld water from Navi Mumbai and Bhatsa dam. Earlier this month, the state irrigation department had agreed to provide 100 mld water to BMC. However, in a meeting held on Saturday with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nahata BMC civic officials said the demand had been turned down.

“They had agreed to provide 150 mld water from their quota of MIDC. However, after the construction of Morbe dam (which is a source for NVMC), they have stopped getting water from MIDC and therefore they said no to BMC’s proposal,” said additional municipal commissioner (projects), Anil Diggikar.

He said the civic body will now directly talk to MIDC and seek the required 150 mld water. “We hope to get the water from MIDC. Had NVMC agreed to our demand, they would have supplied us water they receive from MIDC,” Diggikar added.Even if MIDC agrees to provide 150 mld water, the actual supply will begin only two years later.
