Pune After teaching in two secondary schools in the US for six months as part of a teachers exchange programme, two teachers from the city strongly feel that the internet can bring a revolution in the knowledge level of students. Aparna Naidu, a mathematics teacher at S P junior college and Sujata Deshmukh of Abhinav English Medium High School are all determined to bring Internet connectivity to every classroom in their respective schools.

“Indian students are brighter and have the urge to learn when compared to American students. Although a handful of urban students have access to the Internet, it must be expanded to all secondary student,” says Aparna.

“Internet connectivity is a common facility in most schools in the US and if teachers in India were equipped with the facility, it would bring a revolution in the knowledge level. It helps a lot to understand the fundamentals of science and mathematics,” says Sujata.

Softwares like eschoolPlus, PowerSchool, Blackboard are widely used in US schools to ease the administrative work of teachers. It can be adopted here too, they said.

The duo was among the eight teachers from India who taught in various schools across USA under the United States-India Educational Foundation’s Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program, which is for Indian secondary school teachers of English, Mathematics or Science to participate in direct exchange of positions with US teachers for a semester.

Aparna taught Mathematics at Tamalpais Highschool in San Francisco, while Deshpande taught at Indiana Academy for Science, Maths and Humanities.
