“If the Centre does not scrap its plan to set up a nuclear power plant at Haripur, over one crore coastal fishermen will rise in a massive opposition all over India,” an NFF resolution adopted at its annual general body meeting in Kolkata said.
Describing the Centre’s proposal as “very dangerous”, NFF’s acting Chairperson M Saldhana and acting General Secretary R Patil expressed fear that installation of such a plant in coastal belt might cause accident “resulting in ecocide like that in Chernobyl years back.”
The resolution said there might be radiation hazards that inflict irreversible damage to all living beings as well as marine life. Union Minister of state for rural development and senior Trinamool leader Sisir Adhikari has already opposed the Centre’s move to set up a nuclear power plant at Haripur and threatened to launch a Nandigram kind of agitation.
“When thousands of people thrive on nature’s yield in the area, setting up of such a plant will directly evict 10,000 farmers and fishermen and rob them of their livelihood,” the resolution said. Fifty representatives from various fish workers’ bodies from different states attended the meeting.
