The festival saw participants across all ages and from far-off countries countries like Canada. The surprising element, however, was that nearly all athletes in the 60 plus category completed the race in less than 20 seconds.

Dalip Singh, a resident of Liran village in Ludhiana, had no competitors as he crossed the finishing line in the 100-metre race in 22.23 seconds.

The case of 73-year-old Harbans Kaur, who participated in shot put, discus throw and javelin throw, was similar. Having participated in and having won various athletic events across the world, the proud Canadian said: “If my husband can do it, so can I.”

72-year-old Bikar Singh, meanwhile, thrilled the audience with his well-built body. Participants in the physically-challenged category too, showcased their talents in various events. Nihang Maghar Singh, who had ridden on two horses simultaneously, also entertained the public with his martial arts skills. The Punjab police motorcyclists and horse riders also thrilled the public.

Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was the chief guest on the concluding day. He announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for the Grewal Sports Association. Daljeet Singh Grewal Lalton (Athletics), Gurmeet Singh (Gold Medal in Athletics for the blind), Bela Singh Dehlon (Bullock cart racing), Gurmeet Kaur Butahari (Football), Varinder Singh (Hockey), Gurdeep Singh Pannu (Hockey), Malook Singh (Equestrian) and Amrit Gill (Cycling) were also honoured with lifetime achievement award on this occasion.
