Mumbai Work on sprucing up of stations on the CST-Kalyan stretch is in full steam. Painting, whitewashing, deep cleaning and removal of old papers from offices at stations and muck from tracks are is being carried out ahead of the inspection, the first in 30 years in this section, by the General Manager on March 8.

Till now 2 lakh cubic metre of muck has been removed from the tracks, 8,000 ton scrap rake has been sold. Staff at the stations are being trained. All rakes, drains are being cleaned. Boundary walls near the tracks are being renovated with RCC.

“Renovation is going on at almost all stations specially Byculla, Dadar, Kurla, Thane and Kalyan. Along the tracks, where the muck is being removed, gardens are being created so that people do not use the area to dump garbage or encroach them,” said S Mudgerikar, the Chief Public Relations Officer.

In the last 30 years, the GM’s annual inspection has been carried out in the mainline section but not the suburban section.

Sources said, “When BB Mudgil took charge, he decided to conduct the annual inspection on the suburban section rather than the main line. Even Mumbai division is mostly suburban and 1,410 trains run daily but no inspection has been carried out there.”

According to sources, “The inspection train with the GM and other officials will depart from CST on March 8 and halt at all stations. But he may conduct the inspection tour in local trains as he may not want to hamper passenger movement.”

On the inspection after 30 years, Mudgerikar explained, “In the suburban section, inspection is not an easy task. However the renovation is part of the ongoing work. The GM expedited it.”
