Denying all rumours of shortage of staff at the premier institute, Yadav said 57 senior resident doctors had been inducted on an ad hoc basis earlier this month. He said the recruitment drive was still on. “We have recruited senior residents from different hospitals and some outgoing junior residents have also been inducted on the recommendation of their respective heads of department,” he said.
Yadav claimed that according to estimates made by the AIIMS administration around 130 vacancies for the post of senior resident doctors and senior demonstrators will arise in the six-month period ending in June, of which only 32 vacancies needed to be filled this month.
“We have already inducted senior residents to fulfil the requirements of the current month. These doctors have been inducted on an ad hoc basis, in accordance with the rules of the institute, and at the moment there is no staff crunch at AIIMS whatsoever,” Yadav said.The last batch of senior resident doctors at the institute, however, had a different tale to tell. “The administration is bending rules to suit itself. The term of 180 senior residents got over on January 3 and the administration claims to have recruited 57 senior residents. So what happens to the remaining 123 vacancies?” Dr Kumar Harsh, former president of the AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association, whose term as senior resident got over on January 3, asked.
Meanwhile, sources in the administration also gave contradictory information. “Departments like anaesthesiology and cardiology are already facing a shortage of staff. There are reports of over 30 doctors leaving from the affected departments,” an official said.
Yadav, however, denied these reports. “Most senior residents decide to go for further studies etc and there has always been the need for inducting more of them. The institute will soon recruit more doctors to fill up the vacancies,” he said. “We agree that AIIMS has faced a shortage of doctors in the recent past. We have approached the department of personnel and training to help us in making up for the shortage at all levels. This month, we have already recruited the required number of senior residents,” Yadav reiterated.
Earlier this month, there were reports of an acute staff shortage at the institute. Moreover, the batch of 180 senior resident doctors had at the time claimed that the AIIMS administration had refused to extend their terms, which used to be the general trend at the institute in case of a staff crunch. The administration had at the time also withdrawn an advertisement published on December 2 last year for the recruitment of a new batch of senior resident doctors. Yadav had later claimed that the advertisement was “withdrawn as it had some discrepancies”.
