New Delhi This year, the city celebrated one of the cleanest Diwalis. Pollution data showed that November 2008 was cleaner than December 2007 on many counts: Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and Respirable Suspeneded Particulate Matter (RSPM)—the more dangerous of the two as it gets ingested in the trachea and causes asthma—were lower this year than in the winter of 2007.

In December 2007, the SPM level was 559 mg/metre cube, while in November this year it was 536 mg/metre cube. The RSPM level was also substantially lower this year—in December last year it was 313 mg/metre cube, while this year in November it was 247 mg/metre cube. The switch to CNG seems to have worked.

However, the level of Carbon Monoxide (CO) has gone up to 1,181 mg/metre cube in November from 900 mg/metre cube last year—Pahar Ganj registered the highest level.
