Lucknow, January 11 Over 60 SP workers, led by MP Akhilesh Yadav, staged a demonstration in front of the Lucknow District Jail on Friday. The demonstration was a part of their ongoing statewide protests against the arrest of members of the SP youth wing and the alleged misbehaviour by police officers with senior leader Shivpal Singh Yadav. They demanded that the arrested should be released immediately and action taken against those who had misbehaved with Shivpal.

The demonstration started at around noon and continued for two hours. The protesters raised anti-government and anti-police slogans after they were denied permission to meet the 19-odd party members, who are lodged in the jail since January 8. Only Akhilesh was granted permission to meet one of those arrested — Rakesh Yadav.

The protesters also entered into a scuffle with the jail staff and the policemen stationed outside the jail. Sensing trouble, more forces were put into action and the dharna was finally called off at 2.30 pm.

“If the government continues its atrocities on those associated with SP, we will continue with our protest and will intensify our demonstration. Those lodged in the jail are innocent and they should be released immediately,” said Akhilesh.

On Tuesday, police had lathicharged a group of SP supporters in KKC College when had they tried to show black flags to the higher education minister during a programme.

The police, meanwhile, lodged an FIR against seven people, including the principal of a college, in connection with the violence that took place in Saifai on Wednesday. Dr S K Pradhan, principal of Chowdhary Charan Singh Post Graduate College, near Saifai, said the police were targeting him just because Shivpal Singh Yadav heads the Shiksha Prasar Samiti, which runs the college.
