Following the diktat by the students’ union, the university authorities had asked Middya to report to the library of the Salt Lake campus of the university. The deputy registrar of the university, Sk Ashfaque Ali, told Middya on Monday that the university vice-chancellor and the registrar had permitted her to take classes at the main campus of the university without wearing a burqa.
The students union that had earlier issued the diktat too said that they would not object to Middya taking classes without a burqa if she comes in a “decent dress”. “Almost all students come in a burqa which is the traditional dress. But we will not object if she comes in a decent dress and not in a burqa,” said Hasanur Zaman, general secretary of the West Bengal Students’ Union.
On July 29, The Indian Express had reported the story after which there was a huge outcry over the issue.
Middya had, a few days ago, requested Vice-Chancellor Syed Shamshul Alam to allow her to teach at the university. The Salt Lake campus is the administrative headquarters of the university. “I was told on Monday afternoon by the university authorities that I would be allowed to teach. However, they have not told me about the exact date,” said Middya. She further said the authorities should provide her security at the university to avoid any “unpleasant situation”.
“I have told the V-C that she must be allowed to teach at the university. We have already made it clear that there is no dress code at the university,” said Abdus Sattar, minister in charge of minority affairs and Madrasa education.
Middya, who had joined the university as a lecturer in March, had defied the union diktat. “I have received such a directive from the university authorities and now she will take classes at the Calcutta Madrasa campus,” said the deputy registrar. The new academic session of the university started on July 26.
