According to zoo authorities, the tendering process has started and 20 CCTVs would be installed by the end of this month. “Initially we are starting with 20 cameras but later the number will increase. The cameras would be placed strategically,” said Raju Das, the director of the zoo. Zoo officials said the cameras would be kept in the enclosures of those animals which are susceptible to theft.
On August 8 last year, eight rare Brazilian Marmoset monkeys were stolen from the zoo. Police later managed to nab the gang of thieves and recovered seven of the stolen Marmosets in October. One monkey had died.
According to zoo officials, in the last one year, several security measures have been taken which include increasing the height of the wall of the 50-acre zoo besides having a barbed wire fence. The security agency that was in charge of the zoo has already been changed. They said infrastructure in the zoo has been upgraded.
