New Delhi The national championships for most sports next year can safely be assumed to be held in Delhi. Reason: The competitions will be part of a full rehearsal ahead of the Commonwealth Games in August 2010.

But while that would be the final testing, the venues are likely to host major international events before that. Two, though, have already suffered due to delay in construction.

The Badminton World Championships were to be one of the test events to be held in August this year but had to be moved to Hyderabad. “We will have the Asian Championships in Delhi in April/May as the test event,” defended BAI president VK Varma.

The Commonwealth Boxing Championships, postponed from November this year, were treated with equal nonchalance. “They can take the meet elsewhere,” organising committee secretary Lalit Bhanot said. The hockey World Cup is also to be held in the Capital from March 7-20 next year.
