Kolkata If the visiting team of National Commission For Protection of Child Rights is to be believed, all is not well at the city’s La Martiniere School for Boys.

The two-member team visited the school after parents of Rauvanjit Rawla, a Class VIII student of the school who committed suicide on February 12, filed a FIR at Shakespeare Sarani police station on Monday accusing the principal of the school, Sunirmal Chakraborty, and four teachers for abetment to suicide.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Ashok Agarwal, one of the commission members, said: “There are some serious wrongs (in the school) that need to be be addressed.”

The team members, who have been camping for hours inside the school since Tuesday when they arrived in the city following the complaint lodged by Rawla, have spoken to a number of students, including Rauvanjit’s classmates. Besides them, the two-member team has interacted with alumni of the school, teachers, principal and governing board members. On Thursday, the team met Bishop Ashok Biswas. “We met everyone with whom we could, went to the classrooms. Every person, including the school authorities, were very co-operative and gave information,” Agarwal said.

Sources said the children complained of lack of amenities in the school. They told the commission that corporal punishment was adopted by a number of teachers, including the school principal who personally caned the students.

Rauvanjit’s parents too have accused the teachers of beating his son, constantly abusing and humiliating him.

The team is likely to submit a report in this regard on Monday. Being a statutory body, the recommendations of the commission will have to be adhered by the private English medium school, which is run by Diocese of Churches of North India.

“Whatever decision will be taken will be in the interestof school and the children,” said Agarwal. The commission is likely to issue guidelines for democratisation of the administration and giving the children of the institution a voice.

The school had hit the headlines last month after a teacher, Sanjay Smart, was arrested on charges of seeking bribery from the family of a student.

Detective Dept takes over Rawla case
Considering it to be be a sensitive matter, the Detective Department of Kolkata Police on Thursday decided to take over the case filed by Rauvanjit Rawla’s parents. “We have asked Shakespeare Sarani police station to hand over all the documents and every details to the Detective Department. We have started investigating into it. This is a four-month-old case, so we have to collect the evidence first,” said Damayanti Sen, Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Department.

Very bad on the school's & the principal's part. Govt must take an action on schools who are indulging in such inhuman acts. The principal should admit that the child's death and his beating have a link and authorities must investigate further on this. These lines in the article on this site stop my heart: "Sources said the children complained of lack of amenities in the school. They told the commission that corporal punishment was adopted by a number of teachers, including the school principal who personally caned the students. Rauvanjit%u2019s parents too have accused the teachers of beating his son, constantly abusing and humiliating him" Terrible!

SAVIORS BECOMING KILLERS by J.K. Daniel on 12 Jun 2010

We all try and send our children to the best schools even if the expenses are unaffordable to ensure that our children get the best education that can be given to them and they grow up as meaningful citizens. But, if they get the kind of treatment that was given to Rouvanjit Rawla by the school, then we people have to rethink about the whole system. The saviors are actually killers! Mr Sunirmal Chakraborty should, atleast for a moment, have thought about his own children. I think that all of us should come forward and voice our concern!!
