The bureau’s joint director (Western Zone), Rishi Raj Singh, said they will verify the allotment of all 8,500 such quarters in Mumbai.

“We plan to visit every quarter individually and verify if the residents are legitimate. Eight teams have already begun the process. We have procured a list of quarters and the people to whom they have been allotted to. We also plan to ask the departments for their lists,” Singh said.

The CBI had arrested Madan Mohan Banerjee, assistant estate manager holding the additional charge of estate manager, and his office assistant Chengan Prakash Raman earlier this week. They had allotted flats to non-existent persons, involved estate agents, sub-let the flats and even encouraged unauthorised construction.

The bureau will send a report to the police on the role of two constables in the racket. “Two constables from Antop Hill were reportedly involved in threatening tenants and extorting money from them,” Singh said.

Officials said the bureau has been flooded with calls from government employees who are eager to assist in the probe.

The officials said the probe has uncovered a discrepancy in other government spaces. “Flats meant for higher ranked officials also have garages allotted. We learnt that most of these garages are used by contractors to store construction material. We have got complaints that the stored materials are not used for the maintenance of the quarters but for

private constructions elsewhere. We will register cases on these soon,” Singh said.
