Soon after the chairperson of the standing committee, Madhuben Patel, made the opening remarks, the Opposition members started criticising the ruling party for failing to take adequate steps for the welfare of students.
Many of them criticised the Board for not relaxing school timing during chilling winter. They also pointed at the Corporation's failure to provide progress cards to 1.62 lakh school children in AMC schools.
Taufiq Khan Pathan alleged that the Board has failed to supply textbooks to students even six months after the academic session began. Pathan questioned as to how the Board could deduct sales tax from suppliers' bill when there was no provision for such deduction.
Municipal Commissioner IP Gautam, however, said the AMC has carried out a survey on the conditions of schools and the steps required to provide quality education to students. Mayor Amit Shah also promised that progress cards would be distributed in schools from Monday onwards.
Some Congress leaders called for increasing the budget by Rs 4.48 crore and suggested modifications in the budget heads so that allocated sums could be fully utilised. Former Mayor Himmatsinh Patel said: "Let us try jointly to restore old glory of the board run schools. The Mayor had promised that AMC schools would be transformed in next five years. Before the end of first half, the board also discussed the budget for M J Library, for which very few showed interest in the debate."
