Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam told reporters on Tuesday that the proposal would be placed before the standing committee for its approval. Under the deal with the two housing bodies, the AMC will take up the responsibility of water, drainage and sanitation requirements of the 246 GHB colonies and 15 GSCB colonies that have been suffering lack of basic civic amenities for several years. There are 62,054 houses in the GHB colonies, of which 17,207 houses were built by GSCB.
However, whenever GHB, GSCB had approached AMC for help, it always shirked from taking up the problems, saying these colonies did not come under its jurisdiction. On the other hand, the two housing bodies had been telling the residents that they were not responsible for the maintenance of the infrastructure or providing civic facilities.
While the common plots of these colonies will be given to the AMC, the decision on possession and use of other open land around the colonies belonging to GHB and GSCB has been left to the Urban Development Department.
The AMC has already been levying property tax on these houses, so there is no question of any increase in property tax collections on this account, Gautam said.
