In a bid to end the speculation about his entry into politics, former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday said he would contest from his home town if ever he takes a shot at the ballot box.

“Look, if I ever want to contest elections, I will do so from here, from my hometown,” said Ganguly, who retired from international cricket November last. The cricketer was speaking shortly after steering the senior Bengal team to a win over Assam with an authoritative 64 in a domestic match at the Eden Gardens.

Ganguly’s comments came amid rumours that the 36-year-old has been offered a ticket by the Samajwadi Party heavyweight Amar Singh for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Rumours started after a few TV channels quoted Sourav’s wife Dona as saying in Allahabad that her husband was recently offered a ticket by the SP. However, upon returning to Kolkata in the afternoon, Dona denied making such a comment, claiming she had been misquoted. She was in UP on a two-day visit for a dance show.

However, by then, a large media contingent had already descended on the Eden Gardens, where Sourav was playing an otherwise unimportant one-day match for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

“Those are just rumours. Nothing like that happened (the reported offer from the SP). My wife has been misquoted. She would never say something like that. Look, if I ever want to contest in elections, I will do so from here, from my hometown. But then again, that’s not happening right now,” Ganguly said after the match was over.

“Talking about politics, I am anyway not good at politics,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Dona told The Indian Express, “I was distraught upon learning that some TV channels are quoting me as saying that Sourav has been offered a ticket by SP. It’s out of the question. And if he ever takes to politics, he will contest from Kolkata,” she said.

Sourav’s denial comes in the wake of unconfirmed reports that the CPM too is keen on fielding him in the forthcoming polls.
