Pune The office of the Charity Commissioner, which says it has a staff crunch, has now been told by the Election Commission to spare three officers for election duty.

This will severely affect the functioning of the office, said Sandeep Khardekar, vice-president of the BJP unit in Pune. Following an RTI petition by Khardekar, the office had said it did not have enough people to monitor over 32,000 trusts, including several top hospitals that are obliged to reserve 10 per cent of the beds for BPL families and 20 per cent for economically weak families.

The office had said they receive details from the trusts, but the staff crunch made monitoring impossible. “The office had received a letter asking five officers to monitor all top trusts in the city. But these officers do not have time to spare from work,” Khardekar said.

“State Law Minister Hasan Mushrif assured me on Monday that the office would be adequately staffed. Now the EC is asking for three officers. If these three leave, there will be few left in the office,” he added.

Speaking to The Indian Express, M L Gilani, Principal Secretary for Law, refused to accept any staff shortage. Khardekar said the Charity commissioner had bought several computers for the office, but they were yet to be connected. “The company said the budget provided was for the computers, not for their connection. How will the computerisation be completed in this condition?” he said.
